According to a report released by the Chief Executive of the
ICC, Jeff Allardyce, India earned $1.39 billion from the ICC Men's Cricket
World Cup 2023, which is 11,637 crores in Indian currency.
It was held last year from October 5 to November 19 in the
Indian cities of Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamshala, Hyderabad,
Calcutta, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune.
Direct investment by both the ICC and BCCI (Board for
Control in Cricket for India) in organizing the event and the renovation of
cricket grounds by the sub-state cricket associations of India and Upgradation
projects have directly benefited small and large scale businesses in various
sectors.
861.4 million US dollars was earned from the travel, food
and accommodation of domestic and foreign fans alone.
Apart from this, the Indian economy benefited by 515.7
million dollars in other expenses.
The report states that more than 1.52 million cricket fans
attended the World Cup and 75% of them were fans who came to watch the 50-over
World Cup for the first time.
19% of the foreign fans were fans who visited India for the
first time because of the World Cup, but 55% had already visited India before
the World Cup.
The fans from abroad not only watched the World Cup matches
but also visited many tourist spots which contributed $281.2 million to the
Indian economy.
Among the foreign
fans, 68 percent said they would recommend their friends and family to visit
India as well, increasing the positive perception of India globally.
The ICC World Cup directly created 48,000 jobs in hoteling
and other sectors in India, contributing $18 million to the Indian economy.
In addition, advertising, team kits, billboards and media
campaigns to promote the various teams contributed $70.7 million.
