Gould's 'mail' revealed in twist over Stefano pursuit

League icon Phil Gould has revealed Nelson Asofa-Solomona could be on the way out from Melbourne as the club ramps up its pursuit of Tigers star Stefano Utoikamanu.

Utoikamanu is a free agent after clauses around finals and Origin appearances meant he could negotiate with rivals.

Melbourne is one club interested in the prop, with 9News and Sydney Morning Herald reporter Michael Chammas revealing on Nine's 100% Footy that Craig Bellamy had met with Utoikamanu on Sunday morning.

The meeting came after Melbourne defeated the Tigers on Saturday night.

"The Storm are really intent on making him their next signing, they just need to convince him that Melbourne is the place to go ... I think it ticks all the boxes from a football point of view, it's just whether or not he wants to make the move to Melbourne," Chammas said.

Gould said the Storm would be a good fit for the prop before hinting that Asofa-Solomona could be on the move, without naming any potential landing spots.

"Everyone that goes to Melbourne improves, don't they?" the Canterbury Bulldogs general manager said.

"My mail is that (Nelson) Asofa-Solomona won't be there so I suppose they're looking for a replacement.

"... His (Utoikamanu) next move's important. He's 24 years of age, he's not a boy anymore.

"He's about to come into the prime of his career and he'll need to put himself with a strong side and coaching and it doesn't get any better than the Melbourne Storm."
