Panthers seeking cap relief amid May legal battle

Penrith has begun discussions with the NRL over potential salary cap relief, with Taylan May set to miss the rest of the 2024 season under the no-fault stand-down policy.

The 22-year-old plead not guilty in court this week and will fight domestic violence charges, but the matter has been adjourned until next year after May was granted bail.

May will still receive his full salary under the NRL policy, but it leaves the Panthers without one of their strike weapons as they push for a fourth-straight premiership.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the club are now looking at their options, which could include applying for cap dispensation in a bid to replace May.

Under NRL rules, clubs can apply for pro rata cap relief for a player stood down under the policy, but it wouldn't apply to May's new $500,000 per year deal he signed for the 2025 and 2026 campaigns, instead on his current and lesser deal at Penrith.

The Herald revealed that any potential relief would be worth around $100,000 to $150,000 given May's contract with the club.

St George Illawarra found themselves in a similar boat in 2019, with star forward Jack de Belin the first player to be stood down under the no-fault policy.

The club battled with the NRL and were eventually granted cap relief after more than six months of de Belin's case, which saw him miss over two years of football before all charges were dropped against him in 2021.

Patrick Kaufusi was added to the roster for the back-end of the 2019 season in de Belin's absence after the Dragons received cap relief.
