Twist in 'awful story' for luckless Dragons flyer

After 18 long months, sidelined Dragons speedster Cody Ramsey has taken a massive step towards returning to rugby league.

With the world at his feet at St George Illawarra two years ago, the 24-year-old has been sidelined since being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis - a chronic illness that causes inflammation in the digestive tract.

Ramsey has remained part of the club, despite being limited physically, with the Red V splitting his contract up over two years in order to support his road to recovery.

However, as reported by Nine's Michael Chammas on 100% Footy, the winger returned to training on Monday, and his dream is to make it back to the NRL in the future.

"This has been an awful story for the past couple of years," Chammas said.

"He returned to training for the first time in 18 months and he ran with the team. He is a long way off being able to play in the NRL, but the fact that he was out there running around, catching balls and doing a ball session, it's a significant moment for him.

"I spoke to Shane Flanagan about it and he said that he was quite happy to back on the field. They're not talking about a map back to the NRL yet, this is a very early stage.

"He has lost a lot of weight and he has been really sick - but it's great news for Cody Ramsey. His dream is to get back to the NRL and it was a significant step today."

Ramsey scored 14 tries in 36 first grade appearances for the Dragons after moving from the small town of Molong as a teenager to further his career.

He was diagnosed with the illness prior to the 2023 season and was ruled out for 12 months, before the club confirmed Ramsey would take no part in the 2024 campaign.

In other potential boost for the Dragons, captain and halfback Ben Hunt is reportedly closing in on a new deal to remain with the club, less than a year after he formally requested a release to move home to Queensland.

Dragons coach Shane Flanagan has convinced Ben Hunt to stay put.

"Ben Hunt's manager has spoken to the Dragons and they have had some conversations about an extension in 2026," Chammas said.

"They've agreed to park those discussions until after the Origin series, but every indication so far is that Ben Hunt is going to extend for one more season.

"He is really happy after a period at the club that he wasn't pleased … but under Shane Flanagan, they are now talking about a 2026 extension.

"Look for that to be finalised during the Origin series or straight after."

Hunt was selected at hooker for the Maroons ahead of the June 5 opener.
